“NFC Chat” Senior Project iOS Mobile App

Modernizing the bulletin board via conversations with NFC tags.

Bulletin boards are widely used in public spaces such as on college campuses or at businesses. Though these boards are visited frequently by the people who post on them, they are greatly overlooked by the general public. The goal of my project is to modernize bulletin boards and make them more captivating and interactive for passers-by. NFC tags will be used as posts on bulletin boards as a resource to read and write the messages that would traditionally be posted on a piece of paper. Instead of shuffling through a board overrun with papers, users will be able to walk up to an NFC tag with their iPhone and connect to that tag, allowing them to read and write anonymous messages about that subject. This project can extend beyond just bulletin boards, these NFC tags can be used at locations such as sporting events and concerts to foster a unique chat experience in real time. A benefit of this NFC tag and iPhone interaction is that it fosters in-person communication. One can read the post from an NFC tag from wherever, as long as they have connected to the tag once. However, in order to post to a tag and add to the conversation, the user must physically go back to the tag, connect to it, and then they are able to post their message to the anonymous chat. This way, people who might be too busy to stand in front of the bulletin board for a long period of time will still get the information they desire, and only if they are interested in the topic will they go back and continue the conversation. People who share similar interests can connect in person at the location of the NFC tag and online using the NFC Chat app. Overall, this project will bring people together via location-based conversation for a unique chat experience.
